Hi I’m Jonny

I’m currently a DCI in the Met Police – Deputy Delivery Lead for Operation Soteria (working with academics and policy leads to transform our response to rape and serious sexual offences). I was previously Staff Officer to DAC Dr Alison Heydari Programme Director for the National Police Race Action Plan and currently the most senior Black female police officer in the UK. Working closely with Dr Heydari and understanding her journey as a Black female senior leader in policing has been truly inspiring.

I feel really privileged to have been invited to join NWoCiP as a non-executive member and I wanted to highlight some of the reasons why it is so important to me. Firstly, this work hits close to home for me having seen my mum’s experiences as a single Black woman raising two boys whilst holding down a career working as a manager within the public sector. Though she was not in policing I grew to understand that the same challenges she told me about in the workplace appeared to be replicated more widely, including in policing. I now see things through a different lens and appreciate some of the hurdles women of colour face in society and the role allies can play.

My involvement in NWoCiP allows me to actively support women of colour in policing as a man with differing lived experiences. By addressing systemic obstacles, we create a more equitable environment where everyone can thrive. I believe in amplifying voices. I want to ensure that women of colour are seen, heard, and valued.

Crucially, I believe ally-ship isn’t passive—it’s about taking proactive, meaningful steps to challenge and uplift others. It is my commitment to play an active role, being a bystander and ally in name only isn’t enough…you must be an up stander! It is about committing to positive change and being courageous in doing so even when that may feel challenging.
